Dr. Arshi Rizwani-Nisley, a professor at Laramie County Community College for 12 years, is the recipient of the 2017 Making Democracy Work award. This award is presented by the League of Women Voters to honor people that show leadership and who are safeguarding democracy in the community, state and nation.
Rizwai-Nisley came to the United States from Pakistan when her father, a sociologist, decided to further his education at Colorado State University. When Rizwai-Nisley’s father died, her family returned to Pakistan where her mother lectured at a university. A CSU academic sponsor invited the family back to the United States to open more options for Rizwai-Nisley and her sister.
Rizwai-Nisley traveled to Pakistan in 2016 with her sister to work with the students in the village of Bhaun. A news release from the League of Women Voters said Rizwai-Nisley exemplifies “making democracy work” by being active in the Islamic Center of Cheyenne and serving on the Islamic Board of Trustees, adding that she models strong dedication to education and community participation for her children.
