Houston Brown takes first in saddle bronc riding at LCCC’s Shawn Dubie Memorial Rodeo

Houston Brown took top honors in saddle bronc riding to lead the hometown Laramie County Community College rodeo team at the  Shawn Dubie Memorial Rodeo, held at the LCCC Arena March 2-4.

Competitors from all over the region competed for the buckle at one of the biggest college rodeos in the region. Champions were named Sunday afternoon after competing Friday and Saturday.

Among event winners, LCCC’s Brown rode his horse for the required eight seconds to score a 70 on Friday and an 80 on Sunday in the championship round. Brown moved to fourth in the Central Rocky Mountain Region Standings with the win.

Also for LCCC, Austin Hurlburt took fourth in steer wrestling, keeping himself at the top of the CRMR rankings. Rance Johnson took fourth for LCCC in the tie-down roping, moving him into seventh in the standings. Caydee Johnson led the way for the women as she finished second in the breakaway roping. Her performance moved her into third in the standings.

LCCC started the season with many athletes maintaining their pace in the top 10. Athletes must finish in the top three in their event to make the College National Finals Rodeo, which is held June 11-17 at the Casper Events Center in Casper.

Individual champions included::

Goat tying: Faith Hoffman, Northeastern College

Breakaway roping:  Casey Reimler, University of Wyoming

Barrel racing: Kaitlin Drosihn, Colorado State University

Saddle bronc riding: Houston Brown, LCCC

Bareback riding: Rowdy Moon, Chadron State College

Steer wrestling: Brady Thurston, Central Wyoming College

Bull riding: Jacob Smith, University of Wyoming (Smith was only rider to have two qualified rides)

LCCC Rodeo competes again in less than two weeks at the Gillette College Rodeo on March 16 in Gillette.
