Houston Brown took top honors in saddle bronc riding to lead the hometown Laramie County Community College rodeo team at the Shawn Dubie Memorial Rodeo, held at the LCCC Arena March 2-4.
Competitors from all over the region competed for the buckle at one of the biggest college rodeos in the region. Champions were named Sunday afternoon after competing Friday and Saturday.
Among event winners, LCCC’s Brown rode his horse for the required eight seconds to score a 70 on Friday and an 80 on Sunday in the championship round. Brown moved to fourth in the Central Rocky Mountain Region Standings with the win.
Also for LCCC, Austin Hurlburt took fourth in steer wrestling, keeping himself at the top of the CRMR rankings. Rance Johnson took fourth for LCCC in the tie-down roping, moving him into seventh in the standings. Caydee Johnson led the way for the women as she finished second in the breakaway roping. Her performance moved her into third in the standings.
LCCC started the season with many athletes maintaining their pace in the top 10. Athletes must finish in the top three in their event to make the College National Finals Rodeo, which is held June 11-17 at the Casper Events Center in Casper.
