Leslie John Balsiger, 68, passed away Jan. 4, 2018 in Medford, Oregon. He was born in Wilsonville, Oregon on Sept. 7, 1949.
Balsiger started working at Laramie County Community College in Feb. 2010 as the director of learning technologies until 2017, when he moved to Oregon. On Balsiger’s LinkedIn profile, it said he was responsible for maintaining partnerships with deans, designers and staff to help maintain online learning. He was also in charge of making sure every staff member had what they needed to make online a great learning experience.
Balsiger told the Curry Pilot, a newspaper in Brookings, Oregon, that Balsiger wanted to pursue law school at first but was offered a job at Eastern Oregon University, which gave him the chance to serve the public with gifts he’d been given. Balsiger told the Curry Pilot the story about this one student who couldn’t enroll in classes due to the fact that she already owed them $800. Balsiger paid her debt and when he saw her graduate, he knew it was the right job for him as he wanted to work with students that were in great need. Balsiger started looking at ways the school could help students get a start on college credit while they’re still attending high school.
According to an article in 2018 by the Curry Pilot, Balsiger was a wonderful co-worker.
“He was very into helping out the community,” Patty Scott, Southwestern Oregon Community College President, said. “He also made wonderful partnerships to help better the community workforce and learning needs of the school.”
Private services will be held at a later date.
