HUTCHINSON, Kansas — The Laramie County Community College volleyball team beat eighth-seeded Mineral Area College on Saturday, Nov. 17, to place ninth in the NJCAA national tournament.
The victory gave the Golden Eagles a bit of revenge from last year. The Golden Eagles lost to Mineral Area College in the first round in the 2017 NJCAA tournament 3-1. LCCC also played in the ninth-place match last year but dropped that game to take 10th place.
The Golden Eagles dropped the first set against Mineral Area College but then battled back to win three straight and the match 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-23). LCCC was led by Avery Nelson, who had a match-high 17 kills. Freshman Jazzy Espinoza had 15 kills, while Kylie Martin added 11 kills of her own. Kasandra Sturges had 47 assists and Kyle Meltzer notched 26 digs to lead all players in their respective categories.
The Golden Eagles finished the 2018 season 32-9 while claiming the Region IX North regular season title and the District C crown at the Region IX tournament in Cheyenne earlier this month.
