Laramie County Community College’s Dean of Arts and Humanities Daniel Powell has left to further his career after working at the college for four years.
Powell said that he’s going to Northwest Vista College located in San Antonio, Texas, to be the vice president of academic success.
“It’s a chief academic officer position,” Powell said. “It’s equivalent to our vice president of Academic Affairs here (at LCCC.)”
Powell said he is feeling the heat because the school is rated number one in Texas and number six in the nation, according to its website.
“They have about 18,000 students, but it varies,” Powell said. “So it’s quite a big job. I’ve got to be on my A-game.”
The growth of the dual enrollment at NVC is what drew Powell to move over there and take over the position.
“The job oversees one of the largest dual enrollments in the country and there is a population increase over the next 10 years in the servicing area that will benefit the growth of the college,” Powell said. “They have a newer campus and they’ve exploded with their growth in a very short amount of time … so what attracted me to the position is the opportunities to be a part of that growth and manage one of the largest dual enrollment in the country.”
Powell said his experiences at LCCC will help him in his new position.
“We have been so innovative and cutting-edge that I’ve had opportunities to do twice as much in half the time because of the resources I’ve had access to and an amazing team of people,” Powell said.
Powell said he hopes that he made a difference to where he’s left a sense of empowerment for the team to a point where he’s no longer needed.
“If you leave people with a sense of agency and empowerment then they feel like they can do anything,” Powell said. “It’s not because of me, but because of what we were able to do together.”
Powell also added that his time here at LCCC has been very valuable and he hates saying goodbye to all the real relationships he’s made with faculty.
Powell’s last day at LCCC was May 1 and his first day on the new job at NVC is May 6.
Jonathan Carrier will be the interim dean of Arts and Humanities until a new candidate for the position is decided.
